Registered nurse and dermoscopist Sara Briant from Skin Aware in Three Rivers Medical Centre is now offering a spring skin check promotion.
"Spring is a good season to have your skin checked before summer gets here," Sara says.
"If you have a spot or mole that is causing you some concern, it might've changed in shape or colour, be itchy or scaly, come into the clinic and have it checked out."
Her motto is "if in doubt, get it checked out'. Sara is offering a single spot or mole check for $40 down from $55, and a full skin assessment of the whole body is $135.00.
Sara uses a dermatoscope to examine moles very closely as part of her full assessment of the patient. Photographs are taken of skin lesions that are concerning or need close monitoring and are stored on a secure system. Moles and skin lesions can be mapped over time to monitor closely. If she thinks a mole or lesion needs further investigation and treatment, she will refer patients to the appropriate service.
Sara also offers her skin cancer checks to businesses and will come to your workplace to see people there.
She enjoys being able to educate people about what to watch out for. Having been an ICU nurse for many years, she knows what can happen if cancers are left undetected and wants to help people to avoid that.
"Learning to scan your skin regularly, looking out for any spots that are sore, scaly, changing in colour, shape, size, or are new could save your life," Sara says.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in NZ every year, making up 80% of new cancers diagnosed. NZ has the highest mortality rate from melanoma in the world. Skin cancer is 95 - 100% curable if detected and treated early.
