Sexual Health Clinics at Three Rivers Medical

Our specialist sexual health nurse Sue Schroder offers one-on-one consultations on all matters relating to contraception and sexual health.

“I always had a passion for sexual health and applied for a position at Family Planning and was successful. I worked there for 10 years,” Sue said.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 1.30pm – 5pm

With ten years-experience at Family Planning in Gisborne, Sue brings a wealth of knowledge on everything from the most effective contraception to suit you through to ante natal care and the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections STIs.

Sue has a long nursing career which began in Hawke’s Bay where she trained at the Taradale Polytechnic. Upon qualifying Sue worked as a practice nurse at the Accident Medical Centre in Hamilton followed by six years at Waikato Hospital. This was broken down into two years in the respiratory ward, two years working cardiovascular thoracic care and two years in the High Dependency Unit( HDU).

She then headed off on an OE to England where she spent three years working in cardio thoracic ICU in Papworth Hospital near Cambridge.

She and her husband Doug moved to Gisborne in 2006 and had their twins in 2007.

Sue returned to practice nursing first at Te Hapara before moving to Three Rivers 2012.

During her first ten years at Three Rivers Medical she split her time between here and Family Planning.

She started running the sexual health clinics at Three River in 2021 and for the last three years she has been a nurse prescriber.

She likes the autonomy she has and working with patients one-on-one.

“I like dealing with young people and putting them at ease – reassuring them everything is confidential and talking about matters that can be awkward for a young person to discuss.”

Three Rivers Medical has added an extra clinic and now offers the service on Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursday from 1.30pm – 5pm.
